The Chinese Chamber of Commerce signs a MOU with Makerere University and donates UGX.40 million.

The Vice-Chancellor received the donation and thanked the Chinese Chamber of Commerce and the embassy for their support and collaborative partnership with the university, at a press conference held at the Rotary Peace Centre in the Frank Kalimuzo Central Teaching Facility.

On the 21st of July, The Chinese Chamber of Commerce, an umbrella organization of Chinese enterprises in Uganda, in conjunction with the Chinese Embassy in Uganda, signed a memorandum of understanding with Makerere University and contributed UGX 40 million towards Makerere’s centennial celebrations.

The Vice-Chancellor received the donation and thanked the Chinese Chamber of Commerce and the embassy for their support and collaborative partnership with the university, at a press conference held at the Rotary Peace Centre in the Frank Kalimuzo Central Teaching Facility.

H.E. Ms. Jiang Jiqing, the Economic and Commercial Counsellor noted that there are many sectors through which the consulate and Chinese enterprises in Uganda can partner with Makerere such as health related projects, Agriculture, trade, Computer science and cultural people-to-people exchange among others. She also congratulated the University upon celebrating its 100th anniversary. 

A representative from the China Chamber of Commerce, Mr. Zheng Biao highlighted the diverse nature of the organization as it boasts of over 100 companies, in different sectors, that have set up key projects in Uganda. He also said that the Chamber was proud to be in collaboration with Makerere given its rich history and significance.

He also announced that the signed MOU establishes a partnership to train Makerere graduates with entrepreneurship skills and equip them with opportunities through job fairs in the Chinese business community. 

Makerere has already seen some benefits from such engagements such as the establishment of the Confucius Institute in 2014 whose objective was to provide a conducive environment for training, research and dissemination activities in view of bridging the communication gap, enhancing interaction, promoting cultural exchange and strengthening friendship ties between the peoples of Uganda and China.

The press conference happened a day to the homecoming alumni dinner which was part of a series of events held to commemorate the university’s 100 years of excellence in building a transformed society.
