Centenary Bank pledges UGX. 52 million towards Makerere’s centenary celebrations

Centenary Bank, Uganda’s second-largest commercial bank, and leading commercial microfinance bank in Africa has pledged a fee of UGX.52 million contribution towards Makerere University’s centenary celebrations.

The announcement was made on Tuesday June 1st, at the meeting hosted by Prof. John Ddumba Ssentamu, the Executive Chairman of the Centenary group at Mapeera House, the headquarters of the Group’s three subsidiaries.   

The contribution to Makerere University is aimed at fostering, promoting and supporting programs, projects and activities designed under the theme, “Leveraging the 100 Years of Excellence in Building a Transformed Society” in commemoration of the University’s hundred years milestone. 

Prof. Ssentamu appreciated the role Makerere University plays in transforming lives through education not only in Uganda but across Africa and beyond and extended his congratulations on Makerere’s centennial milestone.

Prof Ddumba Ssentamu said that the contribution would have been immense had Covid 19 not halted the flow of business globally, undermining every sector’s economic performance. “This donation would have been bigger if it was not for COVID. I am quite sure that at the next celebration in the year 2222 , Mr. Vice Chancellor this contribution will be more than 100 times.” He said

The Vice-Chancellor of Makerere University, Prof. Barnabas Nawangwe hailed Centenary bank for its show of solidarity towards Makerere University’s centenary celebrations and argued for a continued strong partnership.

“We are truly happy and grateful for the show of solidarity from the centenary bank towards the Makerere at a hundred celebrations and I pray that this friendship continues over the next 100 years.” He said. 

The celebrations marking Makerere University’s a hundred years are a year-long-scheduled activities, with the final event slated for October 2022.
